How do actors change their accents for different roles?
I think it is cool how people can alter their vocal tone and words to speak in different accents. I wonder how that happens like how Thandie Newton changed her voice to speak with the English accent in "The Truth About Charlie" but then spoke with the American accent in "The Pursuit of Happyness". I think it is cool how people can do that. Or how Alicia Silverston was in Batman & Robin but then spoke with a southern accent in the 2005 film Beauty Shop with Queen Latifah.

Thandie Newton had an English accent to start with…but its fairly easily done, just takes practise, listen over and over and mimic it.

Anyone can do a fair job of it just by listening to that accent being spoken and observing the details of how certain sounds are made. The more detail one can pick up, the more accurate the accent.
You may have observed how some people lose an accent when immersed in a new culture for a while. Others can live in a new culture for years and NEVER lose the accent.
Actors, in preparing for their roles may already have an "ear" for accents and dialects, but, as professionals, they need to prepare quickly and do the lines ACCURATELY. For this, they often hire dialect coaches.

It takes a lot of practice. Listen to a lot of material with the accent. It might take a lot of time to perfect it. There also certain techniques that you can apply but practice is the main thing. I just played an Italian priest in Don’t Drink the Water, and it took me some time to get certain words correct.
You should practice is so much, you break into it and don’t even expect it. Its actually pretty funny.
